Sake or Espresso Cup (Guinomi) by Masuno Toka

A small cup that feels as though it was shaped by snowfall. A thick white straw-ash glaze pools over a softly squared, hand-pinched body and stops in uneven drips above the foot. Below it, the dark iron-brown clay shows through, rough and earthy, with hints of deep green where the glazes meet.
Near the rim, the glaze thins to a blush of pink-lilac and lets the warm clay peek through in tiny speckles. Fine crackle (kannyū) runs across the surface. With use, sake gradually seeps into these lines, and the cup slowly deepens in tone. This is the "seven changes" that Hagi collectors treasure.
The cup is gently irregular in shape and sits low and steady in the hand. Each piece is one of a kind.
