Yunomi or teacup by Shibuya Deishi

A faceted yunomi by Hagi master Shibuya Deishi, in his signature oni-Hagi style. Thick, milky straw-ash glaze pools and drips over a dark iron band at the rim, then thins into a soft blush-white across the cut-sided body, where the coarse clay breaks through in tiny pinholes. The lower body and foot are left bare, showing the warm, sandy texture of the Hagi clay.

Like all Hagi ware, the porous body and fine crackle will slowly absorb tea, so the cup's colour deepens and changes with use. This gradual change is known as Hagi no nanabake, the "seven transformations" of Hagi.
